Zhuni "Da Hong Pao"- Regarded as the "imperial-grade" of Zhuni clays
"Da Hong Pao" Zhuni is an exceptionally rare and premium-grade red clay from Yixing, named after the famed Wuyi Mountain tea "Da Hong Pao" due to its vibrant crimson hue. This clay possesses unique properties, making teapots crafted from it highly prized for both artistic and practical use.
Rarity: Found only in shallow layers of Huanglong Mountain, with thin, nearly depleted veins.
Color: Deep orange-red in raw form, containing faint yellow mica particles, offering a fine yet slightly granular texture.
Composition: High iron content, with a symbiotic mix of clay and quartz, resulting in dense but breathable fired clay.
Extremely high shrinkage rate (25%-30%), leading to frequent cracking and warping—only a 40% success rate in firing (hence the saying "10 Zhuni pots, 9 are wrinkled").
Low temperature (~1080°C): Orange-red with subtle wrinkles.
High temperature (1120°C+): Turns deep red with a glossy, near-glazed finish and increased density.
Natural texture: Fired pieces often exhibit fine wrinkles ("earthworm patterns" or "pear-skin texture"), a signature trait rather than a flaw.
Texture: Smooth as jade, with a metallic ring when tapped due to high quartz content.
Quick patina development: Develops a lustrous shine after just a few uses, deepening to a gem-like red over time.
Shape limitations: Due to low plasticity, most teapots are small (<200ml); complex designs are rare.
Best for: Aromatic oolong teas (e.g., Phoenix Dan Cong, Yancha, Tieguanyin) and ripe pu-erh, as it enhances and concentrates fragrance.
Note: Preheating is essential to prevent thermal shock.
