Tongmuguan in Wuyi Mountain, the birthplace of world-famous black tea, has given rise to many premium varieties, among which "Concubine Smile" (Fei Zi Xiao) stands out as a distinguished member of the Lapsang Souchong family. With its poetic name and sweet, mellow flavor, this tea has captivated the hearts of tea enthusiasts while carrying profound cultural significance.

The name "Concubine Smile" is inspired by a Tang Dynasty poem by Du Mu:

"A single steed raises red dust, winning the concubine’s smile,
None knows it’s the lychee that has come from afar."

The poem recounts how Emperor Xuanzong of Tang had lychees delivered via fast horse relays to please his beloved Consort Yang. The tea borrows this romantic allusion, reflecting its lychee-like sweetness and fruity aroma, evoking the elegance of ancient Chinese culture with every sip

Following the traditional Lapsang Souchong production process—withering, rolling, fermentation, and drying—some tea masters enhance "Concubine Smile" with precise fermentation control or blending techniques to emphasize its natural fruitiness.

Dry Leaves: Tight, well-twisted strands with a dark, glossy appearance and golden tips.

Aroma: Initial notes of pinewood smokiness (a signature of classic Lapsang Souchong), followed by a lychee-like sweetness and longan (dried fruit) richness, creating a complex, layered fragrance.

Taste: A full-bodied, honeyed smoothness with a lingering sweet aftertaste and excellent brew endurance.

Liquor Color: Bright reddish-orange with a golden halo.

Brewing Recommendations

  • Water Temperature: 90–95°C (194–203°F) to preserve delicate fruity notes.

  • Teaware: A white porcelain gaiwan or Yixing clay teapot is ideal for appreciating its aroma.

  • Tea-to-Water Ratio: 5g of tea per 150ml of water.

  • Steeping Time:

    • First infusion: 10–15 seconds (quick rinse optional).

    • Subsequent brews: Gradually increase steeping time.
