Yongchun Fo Shou Oolong – The "Buddha’s Hand" Masterpiece
Type: Medium-oxidized (30–40%) oolong with unique leaf morphology
Origin: Yongchun, Fujian (China) – High-altitude misty terroir
Distinction: Leaves resemble Buddha’s fingers (hence the name)
Harvest: May 2025 (Early summer peak for flavor balance)
The Fo Shou cultivar, a large-leaf tea bush whose leaves resemble the distinctive shape of the Buddha's Hand citrus fruit, originates from Yongchun County in Fujian. For over 300 years, it has been cultivated in the mountainous regions at elevations of 600-900 meters. Revered as the finest among oolong tea varieties—even surpassing the legendary Tieguanyin—it was officially recognized as a "Famous Chinese Brand" by the state in 2008 and honored as "China's No. 1 Tea for the Olympic Bid."
Despite its prestige, Yongchun Fo Shou remains a niche product. Its cultivation area is limited, and its growth rate is slower than many other teas, such as Tieguanyin. This deliberate focus on quality over quantity reflects the dedication of local farmers to preserving its exceptional character.
The tea's name carries deep cultural significance. Buddhism has profound roots in southern Fujian, and legend tells of a monk who, while making daily offerings to Buddha, grafted tea branches onto the Buddha's Hand citrus fruit to impart its unique aroma. Meticulously cultivated over generations, the tea embodies spiritual reverence. The breathtaking landscapes of the Daiyun Mountains—shrouded in morning mist and evening haze, adorned with ever-blooming flowers, and blessed with a perpetual spring-like climate—further enhance its mystique. The triple symbolism behind its name—leaf shape, grafting tradition, and Buddhist homage—may raise questions elsewhere, but in Yongchun, it weaves seamlessly into local lore.
The drinking experience is equally extraordinary. Former residents of this enchanting region often request shipments of Fo Shou to their new homes—could it be that the tea carries the very essence of their homeland? Or perhaps, as some wonder, has Buddha himself infused a drop of divinity into its leaves?
Yongchun Fo Shou is universally regarded as the pinnacle of its kind. Our lightly oxidized, gently roasted offering bursts with juicy flavors of nashi pear, grapefruit, and the distinct citrusy notes of Buddha's Hand fruit. Its texture is luxuriously oily, sweet, and crystalline—utterly irresistible.
